Star of the Sea Church centenary

CARDINAL HUME, Bishop Foley and Bishop Pearson of Lancaster and Dom Ambrose Griffiths, OSB, the new Abbot of Ampleforth, were among the guests who visited Workington at the weekend to celebrate the centenary of Our Lady Star of the Sea and St Michael's Church.
The occasion also marked the arrival of the Sisters of Charity of St Paul in Workington 100 years ago.
The Cardinal celebrated Mass in the parish church, which was designed in 1873 by the architect E. W. Pugin. Immediately after the Mass the Cardinal and Bishops proceeded to the Priory Lawns, where the Cardinal preached.
At a celebration buffet supper on Sunday evening the Cardinal was welcomed by Fr Sigebert D'Arcy, VF, parish priest of Our Lady Star of the Sea since 1952, The Cardinal also cut a centenary cake in the shape of the church with 100 candles on it.
The following day the Cardinal celebrated a Mass of thanksgiving for IOU years of devoted service by the Sisters of St Paul, whose convent in Workington was founded in 1876 by Mother Rita Rowe.
