52-year-old Bishop in Scotland resigns

LESS than six years after his LESS
as the first Bishop of Motherwell. Scotland, 52-yearold Mgr. Edward Douglas has resigned through ill-health. The Holy Father has appointed him titular Bishop of Botrys.
The Bishop has been in indifferent health for some time. His last major public engagement was five days before Christmas, when he opened the Church of St. Bartholomew at Coatbridge.
Mgr. Douglas was consecrated by Archbishop Campbell on April 21, 1948. almost a year after the new dioceses of Motherwell and Paisley had been formed out of the Glasgow diocese.
He was born in Glasgow and was parish priest of St. Anthony's. Govan, the city's huge dockside parish, when he was named Bishop. Ordained in 1924, he had served as a curate at Airdrie and Bailieston as well as in Glasgow.
For 15 years he was a member of the teaching staff of St. Mary's College, Blairs. He returned to parochial work as pastor of Glenboig and later in Govan.
Large diocese
Bishop Douglas was educated at St. Aloysius's College, Glasgow. At Blairs he was choirmaster and organist.
The Motherwell diocese, with a population of 134,559, is the second largest in Scotland and includes the huge coalfields and heavy industry plants of mid-Scotland.
The Bishop's brother, l r. Robert Douglas. is parish priest at Halfway, Cambuslang.
