GAMBLING " ETHICALLY INDEFENSIBLE " Says American Bishop Who Banned Bingo

From Our 011'IL Correspondent NFAV YoRK.
All forms of gambling were termed "ethically indefensible " by Mgr. John A. Duffy, Bishop of Buffalo (N.Y.), in a letter to the New York State Council of Churches, stating his opposition to a proposed amendment to legalise par-mutual betting in New York State.
In his letter the Bishop said: " May I state that I feel that all forms of gambling or any device whose purpose it is to create the notion that something can be gained for nothing are ethically indefensible. I hope that the State of New York and its electorate will not ever resort to such methods to secure public revenue."
Bishop Duffy was one of the first American Ordinaries to forbid the playing of bingo in church halls and for the benefit of church funds.
