50th anniversary of Campion Hall and St. Benet's
ACONCELEBRATED Mass in which three bishops took part marked the 50th anniversary of the foundation of the two famous Oxford seminaries Campion Hall and St. Benet's on Tuesday.
As well as Archbishop Dwyer of Birmingham. Archbishop Roberts. Si., and Bishop Wheeler of Leeds, the concelebrants at St, Aloysius Church, Oxford. included the Abbots of Douai, Downside and Ampleforth, Fr. Thomas Corbishley, S.Jā Fr. Gerard Sitwell and Fr. Guy Braithwaite, O.P.
Some 500 people, including Mr. Kenneth Turpin, the ViceChancellor of Oxford University, scores of dons and the city's clergy, attended the Mass.
Bishop Wheeler paid tribute to the spirit, courage and friendliness of the lay academics who had helped
establish these Jesuit and Benedictine seminaries within the university world.
"Their continuous help," he said, "betokened generosity of the highest order." Noting that it was in 1895 that Cardinal Vaughan allowed Roman Catholics to enter Oxford University, Bishop Wheeler said this move paved the way for "a new involvement of the Roman Catholic Church in the cultural institutions of this country.
"But the Church had been slow to take the opportunity of this and only now ā 70 years later ā is a new picture emerging."
At the triennial dinner of the Oxford University Newman Society on Saturday, Lord Longford mentioned the growth of Catholicism in Oxford and said there were now 1,000 Catholics in the university.
