The Valencia Chalice
Sir.-Your answer about the Holy Chalice at Valencia appears to be irrelevant and incorrect. The bowl of the Chalice is of agate or oriental cornelian and the style and workmanship such that it could be of the period and place of Our Lord's life on earth.
The tradition briefly is this; that the Chalice of the Last Supper was taken to Rome by St. Peter after the death of Our Lady: that it was sent to his native town. Huesca. in the S.W. of Spain, by St. Lawrence the Deacon, with a letter under his own hand, about the year 258, shortly before he and the Pope St. Sixtus were martyred during the persecution of Valerian : that it was taken to St. Juan de la Pefia about the year 713 by Adalbert. the Bishop of Huesca. escaping from the Moorish invasion: that it was brought to Zaragoza in 1399 by Martin the Humane, King of Aragon, and handed over to the Cathedral of Valencia in 1437 by King Alfonso V.
