--ANSWER I understand that the cathedral at Valencia claims to have the original cup Our Lord used at the Last Supper. Of what material is it made and is it really accepted as the original chalice? THE howl of the " Holy Chalice " which is preserved at the cathedral of Valencia is carved from a single sardonyx. Neither the story by which this " Holy Chalice " was supposed to have been taken by St. Joseph of Arimathea, accompanied by St. James the Apostle, to Spain to end up at Montserrat, nor the cup itself is authentic.
The Bollandists reject the story of the travels of St. Joseph of Arimathea: and archeologists and antiquarians reject the relic on the grounds of workmanship.
While on the subject it might be mentioned that the " Holy Dish " preserved at the cathedral of Genoa, which is supposed to have been the dish in which the paschal lamb eaten at the Last Supper was placed. is equally unauthentic.
This is a ,sexagonal green glass vessel which was plundered from Caesarea in 1101; this " relic" is alleged to have the further claim to lame that it was given by the Queen of Sheba to Solomon.
The " Holy Grail " which might refer to either the chalice or the dish is the subject of the legend which is connected with both King Arthur and Parsifal. The Church never looked kindly on the legend. and it remains doubtful whether it was originally Christian with added pagan elements or originally pagan with added Christian elements.
