Leeds
On Saturday next, July 15, Mgr. H. J. Poskitt, Bishop of Leeds, will lay the foundation stone of the new StVincent's Home, Leeds, which is to be the diocesan memorial to the late Bishop Cowgill, who as coadjutor and Bishop served the diocese from 1905 till his death in 1936.
St. Vincent's Home is an orphanage for boys.
Highgate
Cardinal Hinsley, Archbishop of Westminster, will lay the foundation stone of the new St. Joseph's Social Hall, Highgate, London, on Saturday, July 29.
West Bridgford
In the last eleven years the Catholic population of the diocese of Nottingham has increased by 40 per cent., said Mgr. J. McNulty, Bishop of Nottingham, speaking at the opening of a garden party held last week in the grounds of Rydal Mount, West Bridgford, in aid of the fund for reducing the 12,000 debt on the Church of the Holy Spirit, West Bridgford.
Staveley, Notts
The Rev. C. Horspool, parish priest of St. Joseph's Church, Staveley, has built a wayside shrine to Our Lady of Lourdes outside the church.
The Rev. Joseph Digen, parish priest of Swadlincote, blessed the life-size statue of Our Lady, which was formerly in a London church.
East Finchley
A children's cabaret, in which there were 144 performers from the Church Sunday School and Our Lady of Lourdes School, was the chief feature of the annual fête at " Bewley," organised by the Men's Organisation under the direction of the Rev. William Joyce, parish priest. The proceeds of the fete were devoted to the reduction of the debt on Our Lady of Lourdes School.
Poole
Mgr. Barrett, Bishop of Plymouth, solemnly consecrated last week the Church of Our Lady, Poole.
The consecration ceremony began at 7.30 a.m., and was followed by Pontifical High Mass at 11 a.m. The consecration marked the opening of the centenary celebrations of the opening of the church.
Swiss Cottage
About 1,000 people attended a successful three-day fete held recently in the grounds of the temporary church of St. Thomas More, Swiss Cottage, in aid of the Church Building Fund. The fund benefited to the extent of nearly £400. The fete was opened on the first day by Mgr. Myers, Bishop-Auxiliary for Westminster, on the second day by the Rt. Hon. Sir Thomas Molony, Bart., recently Solicitor-General and Lord Chief Justice of Ireland, and on the third day by the Mayor and Mayoress of Hampstead.
Glastonbury
Mgr. William Lee, Bishop of Clifton, will bless and lay the foundation atone of the new church at Glastonbury on Saturday, July 22. The present parish priest at Glastonbury is the Rev. Michael Fitzpatrick. Mr J. A. V. Kelly. of " Keltrip" fame, is arranging a special party to visit this ancient Catholic town for the occasion,
Eastbourne
The five churches in the 150 square mile parish of Eastbourne had to share one garden fête between them. The Rev. J. H. J. Corballis, who presided at the opening of the fête, is parish priest of Eastbourne. The fête was opened by Alderman A. E. Rush, J.P, the Mayor of Eastbourne.
Ugthorpe, Yorks
Over 300 people attended a garden fête and dance held recently in aid of the Renovation Fund of St. Ann's Church, Ugthorpe, Yorks, The net proceeds were £130. The old college buildings at Ugthorpe have been converted by the Rev. J. D. Currie, parish priest, into a modern presbytery and hall, the oak dance floor of which cost £75,
Cinderford
Mgr. William Lee, Bishop of Clifton, opened last week the new Church of Our Lady of Victories, Cinderford, in the Forest of Dean.
An interesting feature of the new church, which will seat more than 350 people, is a twelfth century stone statue of Our Lady and Child, just over a foot high, which was discovered in the grounds of Foothampton Court, Tewkesbury, was taken to Canada, and has now returned permanently to this country.
Cobham, Kent
Mgr. Ducherain, Rector of the Bede College, Rome, opened a garden fête held recently in the grounds of the Convent of Notre Dame, in aid of the debt on the site for the new church. Mgr. Duchemin revealed that if the people of Cobham could pay off the debt of 1400 on the site by the end of the year an anonymous donor had promised £400 towards the building of the church.
The Catholic population of Cobham in the past five years has increased almost three-fold. About £120 was raised by the fete.
Handsworth, Birmingham
Mgr. B. Griffin, Bishop-Auxiliary for Birmingham, will officiate at the solemn opening of the new Church of St. Augustine, Handsworth, on Wednesday. July 26. The Pontifical High Mass will begin at 11 a.m,, instead of at 11.30 a.m., as previously announced. Mgr. Thomas Williams, Archbishnp of Birmingham, is to preach on the occasion.
Warrington
The extension to the Church of St. Joseph, Penkcth, Warrington, made necessary by the increasing congrega tion, has now been opened for use.
The original church was built in September, 1923, and dedicated by the late Archbishop Whiteside.
Much Wenlock
For the first time, last Sunday even ing. July 9, Benediction was held at Much Wenlock, in the little chapel of St. Milburga.
Some time ago Midland Catholics anc others were interested to hear of the work done by the town's postmaster, MI J. Bowden, his wife and friends tc convert an old maithouse, which a reached by a dight of brick steps behind, the Post Office, into a chapel.
