New bishop : 3 candidates chosen

The canons of the Leeds Chapter met on Saturday un

der the chairmanship of the Archbishop of Liverpool and named three candidates as possible successors to the late Mgr. Poskitt as Bishop of Leeds.

The names will be submitted to the Holy See.

Mgr. Provost Hawkswell, rector of the English Martyrs', York, has been elected Vicar Capitular to administer the diocese pending the nomination of a successor to the see.

Mer. Hawkswell wag also Vicar Capitular after the death of Bishop Cowgill and was Vicar General for 20 years until his retirement a year ago.
