Royal physician opens new maternity wing
Horace Evans, Physician to the Queen, last week opened the new wing of St. Teresa's Maternity Hospital in Wimbledon. London on Wednesday.
The wing, with accommodation for 16 beds. brings the total number at the hospital to 56. The record of St. Teresa's, said Sir Horace, is one of which any hospital could be proud. Since the first mother was admitted in 1948, more than 5,500 mothers have been delivered without a single maternal death.
The still-birth rate of 1 per cent is well below the national average.
The first new wing was opened in 1951. by the late Sir William Gilliatt, surgeon-gynaecologist to the Queen. The hospital, under an honorary consulting medical committee, is staffed by the Sisters of St. Anne and its doors are open to all, irrespective of creed.
The new wing will provide wards and private rooms where mothers may be attended by their own doctor.
The Matron, Sister M. Agnes, said later: "Now that we have the wing built, we have to raise the money to pay off the debt on it."
