MGR. GRIFFIN BROADCASTS TO OUR OLDEST ALLY

" At the end of July last year, at four o'clock in the morning, I landed on your soil. The .harbour and the city of Lisbon were brilliantly lit, in welcome contrast to the blackout I had left behind in England. My stay was short," said Mgr, Griffin, Archbishop of Westminster, in a broadcast message to Portugal on December B, the Feast of the Immaculate Conception.
"I had time, however," continued Mgr. Griffin, " to visit the English College, Lisbon, which is an abiding link between the Catholics of Portugal and the Catholics of this country. going back for over three centuries.
" Since then; I have often contrasted the lights, the beauty, the peace, that reigned in Lisbon, with the gloom, the horror and the noises and brutality of war which enveloped most of the continent of Europe. I attributed the peace and happiness reigning in your beloved country to the power and promises of the immaculate Mother of God, whose feast we are celebrating to-day. For you, she has reigned al Fatima as the Queen of Peace, and during the terrible conflagration which spread over Europe you remained untouched.
" By your constant prayer, your devout pilgrimages to her shrine, and your loyalty to the practice of the Catholic Faith, you helped in no small measure in bringing peace to Europe. During those bitter years the friendship which has always existed between my country and your country remained firm and strong.
" It is with such assurances of deep friendship," concluded Mgr. Griffin, " that I ask you to join with us, the Catholics of England, and the Catholics throughout the world, in imploring the help of God and His holy Mother that the reign of justice, truth and charity shall be re-established, so that all men shall be inspired by the charity of Christ."
