International Eucharistic Congress opens'

500,000 CHEER THE
PAPAL-LEGATE R. R. Stokes MORE than 500,000 people crowded the streets of Barcelona on Tuesday evening along the route taken by Cardinal Tedeschini, Papal Legate to the International Eucharistic Congress, after his train journey from Rome, when he drove from the station to the Cathedral for his solemn reception.
As he stepped on to Spanish soil, cannon on the hill overlooking the city fired a salute of 21 guns and sirens and whistles blared out throughout the city.
Five thousand white pigeons were released over the city to symbolise the congress theme, The Eucharist and World Peace."
Thousands of people raced after the Legate's procession as it passed them. and at a number of places the people broke through the linked arms of the police in front of the Cardinal's car.
"I have never heard or seen anything like this," said the Legate.
At one point a man seized the Cardinal's hand and shook it with such enthusiasm that he nearly pulled the Legate out of his car.
Cardinal Tedeschini was greeted at the station by 11 Cardinals and high Spanish Government officials, headed by Senor Bias Perez, Minister of the Interior.
'Germs of war'
During the inaugural ceremony in the Cathedral the Papal Bull appointing Cardinal Tedeschini as the Pope's personal representative was read.
The Legate said he was deeply moved by the demonstrations of affection. The real inaugural speech, he remarked. had been made already by the people who lined the streets and welcomed him. He appealed to all nations to work for peace in unity and friendship.
"It is natural," be said, "that Spain, the Eucharistic nation, should adhere to these sentiments of peace and unity,"
The Holy Father in the Papal Bull stressed the urgent need for peace on earth and called for prayers by all the faithful. His Holiness urged harmony between the different social classes, since all men are children of the Common Father.
"Although it is seven years since the war ended," continued the Pope, -peace has still not been achieved. In the Far East there are the germs of war. There cannot be peace without Christ."
Before the Cathedral ceremony had ended. pilgrims had forrned queues outside to go in to pray before the Blessed Sacrament: the Sacred Host is being exposed on the altar day and night throughout the congress.
