PRIESTS AND RELIGIOUS KILLED IN SPAIN
1,379 Known For Certain—Many More Suspected
1,379 priests and religious, from 27 religious orders and congregations, have been killed in Spain since the outbreak of the Civil War. This figure does not include unknown hundreds of secular priests who are believed to have been killed.
The following statistics have been sent to us by Fr. Ledit, S.J., Editor of The World Problem, Rome.
Father Ledit was responsible for the Exhibition of Communist Propaganda, held recently at the Russian College, Rome.
The following list shows how many from each order or congregation have been killed, These are the minimum figures, and do not include the names of those who have disappeared or who are thought to have been killed.
Thus, the Franciscans claim to have some 250 victims, the Hermit of St. Augustine, 140, and so on.
Among the 58 Benedictines killed were a complete community of 40.
