priests
DESPITE the immense slaugh
ter of priests, seminary students and religious during the Civil War, Spain today has more priests than in 1936, when the fighting began.
Priests-including members of religious orders and congregations
number 31,085. This exceeds the 1936 total by about 5,500.
Altogether about 7,300 priests. seminarians and members of religious orders and congregations Were put to death by Republican troops and mobs.
They included 13 Bishops, 4,266 secular priests, 2,489 members of men's congregations, 283 nuns and 249 students for the priesthood.
This meant that one out of every six priests and religious was killed.
Today the seminaries are crowded. There has been an unprecedented revival of religious devotion in Spain, and more and more young men are following their vocations every day.
And besides the young men there has been a notable increase in vocations among older men. A number of lawyers, doctors and other professional men have entered seminaries.
As a resultSpain is once more sending out missionaries.
