To MARK World Hospice and Palliative Care Day on October 7 five hospices in England and Wales are receiving £10,000 each from the proceeds of Day for Life, the day in the Catholic Church's year dedicated to celebrating the sanctity of life, writes Peter Jennings.
The hospices are Birmingham St Mary's Hospice; St Anne's Hospice in Gwent; St Joseph's Hospice in Hackney; St Joseph's Hospice in Liverpool and St Raphael's Hospice in Sutton.
Archbishop Vincent Nichols of Birmingham, who presented the £10,000 cheque to Birmingham St Mary's Hospice on October 4, said: "I have seen at first hand the important work of Birmingham St Mary's Hospice — the lives that have been touched, the care that has been given, the love that is shown to each and every person and family member."
Cardinal Cormac MurphyO'Connor said: "I am highly delighted that we are able to give public recognition to this vital work."
