ONE OF Manchester's bestknown Catholics, Mr Tom Henry, former editor of the Manchester Evening News, has died, aged 73.
He was editor of the Manchester Evening News for 23 years. from 1946-1%9, finally retiring from the company board in 1974. During his editorship it became Britain's
biggest-selling regional newspaper.
Through his membership of the ('atenians he became involved in Manchester University's Catholic chaplaincy. He was a governor of Hopwood Hall, the Catholic teacher training college. He was also active in helping Manchester's Morning Star hostel for derelicts.
He was named Mancester's Man of the Year in 1969, and the same year the university awarded him an honorary Master of Arts degree.
One of his oldest friends was the former manager of Manchester United football club, Sir Matt Busby, also a Catholic.
