" LIVERPOOL WILL KEEP THE FLAG FLYING"

Keywords: Liverpool

RUMOURS spread about recently of a defeatist spirit among citizens of Liverpool in the more heavily blitzed districts have been refuted by the Very Rev. Dean T. J. Rigby, V.F., of Li% CIpool, when he spoke recently in Preston. It was alleged that white flags had appeared at various points, and that the populace had been demanding peace.
One rumour to the effect that Liverpool was put under martial law was " a deliberate lie," he said. " Soldiers were there only to direct and assist the police and the people."
Another lie was that the Archbishop had been called upon to quell riots by the Irish in Liverpool. " This was a vile, scandalous calumny," declared Dean Rigby, who added that the Archbishop had been among his people merely to help and encourage them. Despite the damage in the speaker's (evil district of the city, people said : " Never mind ; we'll build it all up again."
" You can take it from me: Liverpool will keep the flag flying," concluded Dean Rigby.
