"YOUR DUTY TO GOD AND KING"

Mgr. Griffin Talks to Girl Guides
We must never forget that we 11.0,e to discipline our thoughts, our words and our actions. Nowadays, purity is reckoned as a Vic torian virtue. It is, on the contrary, a very Christian virtue. It is a virtue practised by heroes through daily self-conquest. Others will tell you that it is impossible to be pure. This is, of course, absolutely true--without God's help," said Archbishop Griffin in a sermon preached to a rally of Gill Guides at Westminster Cathedral last week.
" I am very glad to know that the Girl Guide Movement is again coming into its own. I say ' again ' because there was organised opposition against both the Boy Scouts and the Girt Guides just prior to the war. It was wrongly stated that both your uniform and training were of a purely military nature. Our well-meaning pacifists, in their desire to prevent this country being prepared for eventualities, tried to hinder your Movement.
" I am glad to have the opportunity of talking to you to-day because I want to express my wholehearted sympathy with the Girl Guide Movement. Whether you are Brownies, Girl Guides or Rangers, my words to-day will apply equally to you all.
" The great character of the Movement is that it puts things in their right order and perspective. All of you have promised to do your duty to God and the King, and to hetp other people ut all times, Thereby you express your twofold loyalty, first to God and then to the King, and you will all be better members of the Movement in so far as you fulfil these two essential conditions. You will remember how, when our Lord was tempted by the Phariseee. and asked whether it was lawful to give tribute—that is, to pay taxes—to Caesar or not He replied, ' Rendet to Caesar the things that are Caesar's and to God the things that arc '.Gods." It is by the neglect of one of these essential conditions that the young people of some countries become young Nazis. young Communists or young pagans.
RELIGION FIRST " Whether you are actively engaged in the Movement, or wherever you ale, you must always put your religion first, and in fact the Church teaches you that if you want to get the best out of your life on this earth you will see that your religion enters into every not of your daily lives. It seems rather a platitude to say that we roust do our duty to God. But in the lives of very many people, and irt the actions of the Governments of many nations, God does not count. Sometimes His name is only used to revile Him. It is amazing how many children and how many adults do not know the answer to the second question in the Catechism. ' Why did God make use ? I am sure all of yost know the answer. God made me to know Him, to love Him and to serve Him in this world and to be happy with Him for ever in the met.'
" Girl Guides are taught discipline and discipline is invaluable. Discipline accepted from supernatural motives will not only be more valuable but will help you to obtain grace and so prepare you for greater works for our Blessed Lord.
" You are also taught to be observant and to notice those things that go on around you, whether you are taking a, country walk, or going through the streets of a city. or at work, in a factory or in an office. You are told to see, judge and act.
" You are taught to be useful at home and in your further training you are taught those essentially womanly pursuits of home nursing, first-aid, infant welfare, cooking and dressmaking; and if you can become more efficient by being taught the latest devices, so much the better for you and for others.
" You are also trained in physical health and I know that in your Movement this is done not with excess but with due ipoderatioa.
