BOOST FOR RADIO AND' TV CENTRE

MORE than £6,000 was given
. on kit:111day to,the fttr,c1 to build a new Catholic. Centre for Radio, Televisions and Cinema. The donations came from 200 people who attended a campaign meeting in London, the first of a four-week series in the Westminster Archdiocese.
To date the fund has received £174,000 towards its £500.000 goal. Campaigns have already been held in the Leeds, Northampton, Nottingham, Newcastle and Middlesbrough dioceses.
With this money the centre plans to extend its premises at Hatch End, Middlesex, and to enlarge its staff so that it can become a "Catholic University of the Air", providing ready-made programmes and training broadcasters for Britain and the developing countries of Africa, Asia and Latin America.
BROADCASTS TO AFRICA
By next January it hopes to start a weekly programme of religious news, comments, music and reviews for East African countries. Soon after that, for West African countries as well.
Fr. Agnellus Andrew, director of the centre, plans to visit South Africa next spring to give a training seminar for priests. Eventually, he hopes to establish fulltime permanent centres all over Africa.
Requests for scripts and tapes have been pouring in to the centre from as far away as Australia. The organisers expect their work at home to be multiplied in the next few years because of an expected development of local radio and TV stations, each with its own programmes.
