Sra,-I have recently read that in New Zealand there has been formed a lending library of Catholic literature in Braile.
This has led me, as a member of the Executive Council of the Royal National Institute for the Blind, to wonder whether there is anything I can do to promote a more ample provision of Catholic literature in Braille for the benefit of the blind here.
I have particularly in mind that there may be a need for a Catholic monthly in Braille. There is already a small magazine appearing once every two months called "The Crusade Messenger," produced by the devoted efforts of Miss Vansittart and her friends of the Apostleship of Prayer. This being a private venture, is necessarily very small, and naturally consists almost exclusively of spiritual reading. I believe that something rather more ambitious may be needed containing not only additional spiritual reading but news and articles of topical interest selected (with appropriate permission) from the papers.
From my own personal experience I have no idea whether a sufficient demand exists to make such a venture worth while, and I am wondering whether it is too much to ask parish priests and priests in charge of institutions where Catholic blind people are resident to let me have answers to the following questions:
I. How many (if any) blind people they have in their charge who read Braille.
2. How many of these would be interested to receive a monthly magazine of the kind mentioned above.
3. Of the latter, how many of them either would be willing to subscribe say is. a month towards the cost, or would have sponsors willing to do this for them, and 4. Whether it would be practicable for them (the priests) to appeal to their congregations for funds to create the kind of endowment envisaged in this letter in support of a Braille magazine and of Braille publications generally. I wish to make it quite clear that I am not now asking for subscriptions.
