on Monday morning from a heart attack. He was 53.
Mgr. Giovanni Battista Montini, Vatican Under-Secretary of State, reported the Minister's death to the Holy Father when the news was officially announced shortly before midday.
Mgr. Monlini then called to deliver the Pope's personal condoknees to Lady Perowne, Later an Italian delegation arrived to offer the condolences of Count Sforza.
Born in 1897, John Victor Thomas Woolrych Tait Perowne entered the diplomatic service in 1920. He served in Madrid, Lisbon, Paris and Copenhagen. with intervals of duty at the Foreign Office in London.
BRILLIANT Lord Holden, Catholic Labour Peer, who was a close friend and former colleague paid this tribute to the late Sir Victor : " He was a brilliant man, an excellent linguist, and most sympathetically disposed to the Church. Though not a Catholic himself. he had an enormous knowledge of things Catholic.
"1 realise how easy it is to say it, but it's definitely true that Catholics in this country have suffered a grave loss in his death."
