LEWES' NEW CHURCH

Mgr, Amigo Lays Foundation Stone
Mgr. Amigo, Archbishop-Bishop of Southwark, was present at Lewes on Sunday, August 7, and blessed and laid the foundation stone of the new church which is to be erected on the site of the old, and dedicated to St. Pancras, the Roman boy martyr of the Blessed Eucharist. The preReformation priory which originally stood on an adjacent site was dedicated to this saint.
The new church is expected to be completed by Christmas and is to cost about £7,500.
Room Licensed for Weddings
In the meantime rooms at the school are being used on Sundays, and for weddings a room at Rev. F. Flanagan's house has been licensed.
The church is being built in thirteenth century style and will have accommodation for 240. It consists of a nave, a short aisle, baptistry, a confessional, priest's and working sacristies, and an organ over the lady chapel with a console in the south gallery.
The foundation stone is inscribed in Latin:
" To God, the best and the greatest. In honour of St. Pancras, martyr, in the year of the incarnation of Our Lord, 1938, and in the seventeenth year of the pontificate of our most holy lord, Pope Pius XI, the most Reverend Father and Lord, Peter, Archbishop of Southwark, solemnly blessed and laid this foundation stone on the 6th of August."
In one corner is the name of Edward Walters, architect, and in the other that of " Frederick Flanagan, parish priest,"
