Mexican saint campaign

PETITIONS containing the signatures of 26,000 people supporting the cause of canonisation of Juan Diego, the Aztec Indian to whom the Blessed Virgin appeared as Our Lady of Guadalupe, have been presented to the official in charge of seeking his canonisation.
The petitions, gathered by two organisations, Franciscans for the Cause of Juan Diego and Queen of the Americas Guild,
were presented to the official Mgr Enrique Salazar, at the Offertory of a Mass celebrated by Bishop Jerome Hastrich in the Basilica of Our Lady of Guadalupe in Mexico City. s"
Juan Diego is the outstanding model of evangelisation in Christian history, Bishop Hastrich said, because eight million persons came to be baptised in Central America within the decade after the Blessed Virgin left her image on his cloak in 1531.
