Madame Allende, widow of the Chilean President, and Luis Corvalan, general secretary of the Chilean Communist Party, are in Britain for vigils and meetings to mark the fourth anniversary of the military coup which brought down the Allende Government. A fundraising concert for the Chilean Solidarity Campaign is to be held nn September 25 at the Theatre Royal, Drury Lane. This will feature Quilapyim, a Chilean folk group. (01-272 4298), The National Association of Youth Clubs is organising a one-day conference, on Tuesday, October 11, to draw attention to the problems of rural life for young people owing to ever-decreasing transport provision, poor employment prospects and long journeys to school.
Mr Stephen Ross, MP for the Isle of Wight, will chair the conference, which will be held at the International Students House, 229 Great Portland Street, London, WI.
The morals campaigner Mrs Mary Whitehouse, founder of the National Viewers and Listeners Association, is speaking in Hackney Town Hall, London, on September 27. The organiser of the meeting, Alan Wye, says: "We welcome young people who can take this chance of finding out what they can do to change society," The title of the speech is "Whose Freedom?"
The International Serra Club, which aims to foster vocations to the priesthood and religious life, will hold its national conference at Hopwood Hall, Middleton, Manchester on September 17 and 18. Archbishop Bowen of Southwark made a return visit to his former diocese of Arundel and Brighton
yesterday when he visited Our Ladyof England Priory, Storrington, to
ordain Brothers Alban Gillooly and Dominic Kirkham as deacons. Cardinal Hume will speak on "The Christian and the Unborn Child" at the annual conference of LIFE, the national pro-life organisation, at the Royal Spa Centre, Leamington Spa, Warwickshire on September 16. More than 400 delegates are expected to attend the conference which will continue until September 18. Bishop John Gibbs, Anglican Bishop of Coventry, will also be present.

Many churches in the Borough of Blackburn opened their doors on Tuesday and Wednesday to act as collecting points for old clothes and blankets for aged refugees and destitute people overseas. The scheme was sponsored by Mrs Bramley-Haworth, the Mayoress of Blackburn borough as well as local clergy of all denominations.

Peter Mallinson (above), a 25 Bear-old quantity surveyor with righton Corporation who is also a bass-baritone, is giving a concert tomorrow in aid of St Patrick's Church at Woodingdean, Brighton. It will be held at Our Lady of Lourdes School, Rottingdean, and ranges from opera and oratorio to ballads. The pilgrims who took part in the Stonyhurst Family Pilgrimage to Lourdes will be arriving home over this weekend. The party was made up of handicapped and nonhandicapped. More than 20 present pupils from Stonyhurst took part, as well as 11 boys recently at the school.
The Catholic Enquiry Centre has increased its audience and its income. Figures just published show that this London-based organisation, set up in 1954 to speed Catholic information to nonCatholics, had an income of £51,770 last year — £5,000 more than 1975. The money, all from donations, has been used to pass information to nearly I 4,000 people.
John Betjeman will be at the 17th century Anglican Church of Saint Mary-le-Strand, London, on Wednesday to launch a nationwide appeal to save it. The frontage of this "island" church in the Strand was cleaned for the Queen's Silver Jubilee, but major works are needed to prevent further decay.
Eighty members of local House groups from many areas of England are meeting at Spode House from today until Sunday for a conference organised by Family and Social Action. The theme is "Christian Faith and Social Commitment." It will be opened by Mr Tom Casey, KSU, of Liverpool.

1 he Poor Sisters of Nazareth in Finchley, London, are going to build a new home for the aged on the site of the present home which has now decayed beyond repair. The new home will house more than 50 elderly people in single and married units.
