Change in appeal advised
WITH reference to the recent "horrific disaster" which has struck the Pacific Coast of Nicaragua, reported by Joan Smith in her letter from Nicaragua (Catholic Herald, Sept 11), and the appeal for donations to deal with this emergency made by the Nicaragua Health Fund, I suggest that the latter first appeals for funds to the following:
Cardinal Obando y Bravo, who is building a cathedral in Managua costing many millions of pounds in one of the poorest countries in America, repeatedly devastated by earthquakes.
The Vatican, which, according to the article on page I of the same issue of your paper, is currently constructing a multimillion pound observatory in Arizona, USA.
Both these sources one actually in Nicaragua appear to have plenty of funds which I submit should be spent on repairing the very extensive damage caused by the floods so vividly descried by Joan Smith rather than on the projects at present under construction.
