Sing-a-long-a-Sal faces ban

by Coky Giedroyc
BORN-AGAIN Catholic popstar, Sal Solo and his recently released anti-abortion song, "How was I to know?" (Awesome Records) have met with a disastrous response. Refused airplay on national radio and rejected by distributors across the board, the song appears to be floundering in the vast unknown. Geoff Simpson from Radio I hadn't even heard of the song, but learning of its subjectmatter, suspected that it would be deemed unsuitable for the radio's "family audience".
A spokesman from Capital Radio told the Catholic Herald that a playlist committee to decide which records would go on air rejected "How was I to know?" because "it simply did
not reach an acceptable standard". A member from the committee remarked of Sal Solo "this gentleman has never made a decent record in his life"
Sal Solo has a very different story to tell. He described to the Catholic Herald how the record has faced an unofficial blockage in record stores and on the high street. "Young people were told it
was out of stock" he complained.
Although resigned to falling short of the sales explosion of another Madonna, SPUC who are distributing the record, spoke enthusiastically this week of sales hitting the 1000 mark.
Deirdre Macdonald of the prolife organisation described it as "a poppy-easy-sing-a-long-typecatchy tune".
