Conscience and the Magisterium

From Fr Bryan Storey Sir, You report this week that the late Cardinal Carter said that if Catholics cannot follow the Church's teaching in Humanae Vitae they are bound to follow their conscience.
Out of respect for Pope Paul VI if for no other reason, it is only just to point out that the Church's teaching cannot be in opposition to the Voice of Conscience. It is on account of Conscience that many of us find ourselves united with the Catholic Church rather than some other community. What is meant by much loose talk about conscience in these matters is that due to inaccurate reasoning in our fallen condition we often reach false conclusions in a conscientious sort of way.
Yours faithfully, BRYAN STOREY, Tintagel, Cornwall
