Auberon Waugh to fight by-election
By a Staff Reporter MR. AUBERON WAUGH is to contest the Bridgwater Parliamentary by-election as an Independent, with the support of the Political Freedom Movement, which is pledged to reform the existing party political and electoral systems.
Mr. Waugh, 30, is the first Parliamentary candidate to promise support for the Political Freedom Movement's three principles, These are, that all Commons votes shall be "free" ones, that Parliament should control Prime Ministerial powers of appointment, and that the electoral system be so changed that electors can choose their own candidates and not be restricted to a choice between party nominees.
DISGUST A statement by the Movement on Wednesday said that "the collusion of the present Government in the destruction of Biafra, a policy undertaken without Parliamentary debate or disclosure, has capped Mr. Waugh's disgust with the party system.
Mr. Waugh, son of Evelyn Waugh, the novelist, was educated at Downside and Christchurch, Oxford.
He has written four novels and the recently published "Biafra. Britain's Shame." He is married with four children.
He is political correspondent of The Spectatnr and in the early 1960s contributed a weekly column to the CATHOLIC HERALD.
The by-election is caused by the death of Sir Gerald Wills. Conservative M.P.
Chairman of the Political Movement is Air Vice-Marshal D. C. T. Bennett, war-time head of the R.A.F. Path-. finder Force.
Voting figures at the 1966 General Election were: Sir G. Wills (Cons.). 20.850; R. Mayer (Lab.). 17,864; P. G. Watkins (Lib.), 8,205. Cons. majority, 2,986.
