MR. MYRON TAYLOR BACK IN ROME
ROME.
Mr. Myron Taylor, President Truman's personal representative to his Holiness the Pope, arrived back in Rome, after an absence of six months, on Sunday last,
Taylor had come by way of April 1. 4, Lisbon and Madrid, where he had an interview with General Franco which lasted for an hour-and-a-quarter. While in Madrid also Mr. Taylor had interviews with Cardinal Pla y Deniel and with the Apostolic Nuncio to Spain, Archbishop Cicognani, as well as the Spanish Minister of Foreign Affairs.
On Monday Mr. Taylor had a private audience with. the Pope lasting nearly an hour, during which, it is understood, he handed to the Pope a personal toter front President Truman.
Vatican officials. referring to the purpose of Mr. Taylor's visit, describe it as " a normal routine visit to his diplomatic post.
PURPOSE OF VISIT Various Press reports have emphasised the significance of Mr. Taylor's return to Rome at this juncture, exactly one week before the Italian
elections. Guesses regarding the purpose of the Prekident's letter to the Pope are many, but lack •author
ivy. The Catholic paper, Quotidian°, said that Mr. Taylor's visit has " a well defined purpose " particularly in view of his interviews in Ljsbon and Madrid. Catholic papers in general, however, are more interested in the fact of his return to Rome. as proof that the hostility of certain Protestant groups in the United States to his mission has had no practical effect.
Recalling that there are 25,000.000 Catholics in Ameriea. the Quotidian° states: "That is why the White House cannot ignore the Holy See with which almost all nations have diplomatic relations."
Mr. Myron Taylor's present vi,sit is expected to last two or three months at least.
Cardinal Sibilia Is Seriously Ill
Cardinal Sibilia. Bishop of Sabina and Poggio-Mireteto has had a paralytic stroke and is seriously ill. The Cardinal is 87 years old, and was created Cardinal by Pope Pius XI in 1935.
