Mr. Frederick Carvell, who for more than 60 years served at Mass in Kettering, Northants, died last week at the age of 86.
He served at the first Mass in a billiards hall in Kettering in 1891, and almost half a century later cut the first sod on the site of the present church. He was awarded the Benemerenti Medal by the Holy Father in 1950.
Mr. Carvell returned to his home town of Daventry seven months ago.
