Britain's hands link in support

CARDINAL Hume and the Archbishop of Canterbury, Dr Robert Runcie were among the national leaders who gave public support to the human chain that spread across Britain last Sunday to highlight the plight of the unemployed.
• More than 250,000 people linked hands at 3 pm on May 3, following an inaugural service concelebrated by Archbishop Derek Worlock of Liverpool, Anglican bishop David Sheppard and Free Church Moderator John Williamson at the Metropolitan Cathedral in Liverpool. "Hands Across Britain" stretched 350 miles, from Liverpool's Hope Street to London's Downing Street in a demonstration that attracted an unprecedented coalition of political and religious support—including Neil Kinnock, David Owen, David Steel and Chief Rabbi Sir Immanual Jakebevits.
The inaugural service at Liverpool's Cathedral, said Archbishop Derek Worlock, was "not an act of protest but an act of commitment", which aimed to involve "the whole community . . . in real, longterm action" on behalf of Britain's three million unemployed.
The Archbishop went on to say that there was nothing political about the demonstration, and that he was praying that people all over the country would join hands to show their common determination to tackle unemployment. . •
