FISHER HOUSE MAY BE DEMOLISHED
CONCERN at the prospect of the removal of Fisher House,-the H.Q. of the Fisher Society for Catholic Undergraduates in Cambridgewas expressed by speakers at the annual dieper on Saturday, when the guest of honour was Cardinal Griffin.
Fisher House is the religious and social centre for Catholic undergraduates in Cambridge, and under the Holford Plan is to he demolished to make way for what Mr. Norman St. John Stevas described as a "shopping-boulevard."
He continued to say that the recent increases in the numbers of Catholics at the university had forced the Fisher Society to make expansions in both premises and in activities. The removal of Fisher House would coostitute a "threat to corporate Catholic life in the university," as there was no comparable alternative site available.
Cardinal Griffin spoke of the great value of a university education, saying that although it provides the danger of acquiring a superficial approach to life, it also gives an opportunity for taking stock of matters both of this world and of the next. and for developing a reasoned approach to problems.
University towns are well known for their large numbers of cyclists, he went on. and the danger to Fisher House seems to come largely from these. It was unlikely that ears constituted the main problem, for in Westminster he often finds it difficult to reach his own front door because of parked cars. and No one has suggested the removal of the Cathedral."
