KALENDAR OF THE WEEK

Sunday, July io. Fifth Sunday after Pentecost. The Seven Brothers.
The Seven Holy Brothers, martyred in the reign of the Emperor Antoninus Pins in the second century, were the sons of St. Felteitas, also a martyr. Tliat heroic mother, a widow, followed her suns, in martyrdom, a few months after their death.
Monday, July II. St. Pius I.
To the second century belongs, also the history of Pope St. Pius 1, successor to St. Hyginus in the Chair of Peter. This pontiff has always been reputed a martyr, it not by suffering death for the faith at least by the hardships endured by him from the Pagan government of his time_ Blessed Oliver Plunket, Archbishop of Armagh, martyred, 1681.
Tuesday, July 12. St. John Gualbert.
In St. John Gualbert we honour the founder of the Vallorobrosians, monks of strict Benedictine Observance whom he established, in the eleventh century, and governed as abbot until his death in A.D. 1073, when there were already twelve monasteries of the order.
Blessed David Gonson, Knight of St. John, martyred, 1541; Blessed John Jones, 0.F.M., martyred, 1598.
Wednesday, July 13. St. Anacletus.
St. Anacletns, one of the earliest of the Roman pontiffs, is stated in the Liber Pontificalis to have been ordained priest by St. Peter himself. There has been much discussion as to his identity with Pope St. Cletus, but the Church has always distinguished the two Popes, who have separate feast days in the Kalendar. St. Anactetus is said to have suffered martyrdom during the persecution under Trajan.
Blessed Thomas Tunstal, O.S.B., martyred at Norwich, 16t6. Thursday, July 14. St. Bonaventure, Doctor of the Church.
To-day's saint is one of the greatest figures in the Franciscan Order; he was a Cardinal Bishop, an eminent writer, and has been given the title of " the Seraphic Doctor." But for his humility, St. Bonaventure, aTuscan, might have been Archbishop of York, Pope Clement IV having chosen him for that office.
Blessed Richard Langhorne, martyred, 1679.
Friday, July 15. St. Henry, Emperor.
The Emperor St. Henry reigned in Germany for many years in the eleventh century. His rule was marked by justice and wisdom, respect and aid for the Church in maintaining her rights and discipline, and a disposition exercised against rebellion and arrogant feudal exactions. St. Henry died in A.D. 1024 and was entombed in the cathedral at Bamberg.
Saturday, July 16. Our Lady of Mount Cannel.
The feast of Our Lady of Mount Carmel was instituted by the Carmelite Order in the fourteenth century, and is the Order's patronal festival. The date for the celebration, July 16, was assigned because traditionally it was on that day that the scapular was given by this Lady to St. Simon Stock.
