From Mr Giles Pearson SIR — Charlie Hegarty (Notebook, December 1) asks what Jeremy Paxman would make of the extravagant but heartfelt devotions of the pilgrims at Fatima.
Anyone who watched Mr Paxman's recent softly-softly interview with Richard Dawkins will guess that behind that objective facade lurks a metropolitan disdain of religion.
I recall that "he of the sardonic smile" was among the first to praise the outrageous 2003 Panorama documentary Sex and the Holy City.
But the Newsnight leopard may be capable of changing his spots. This once staunch Republican's latest book is a paean to the British monarchy. Perhaps his next will be a celebration of apparitions of Our Lady.
Your faithfully,
GII FS PEARSON Bromley, Kent
