Oxford honours Corpus Christi

BY BATHELEMY DRAME THE BUSSED Sacrament was carried through the streets of Oxford on Sunday to mark the feast of Corpus Christi.
The custom, revived three years ago at the urging of Fr Richard Duffield, parish priest of the Oxford Oratory, brought together all the parishes and religious orders of the north Oxford deanery.
A long stream of people and priests, students, dons, and religious — about 300 in all — turned out to bear witness to their faith. The procession also attracted people who had originally come into the town centre for the Golden Jubilee celebrations. The event began with prayers and hymns at the Oratory, after which the procession proceeded to Blackfriars.
As the procession continued through the busiest shopping area of the town, many bystanders seemed impressed, some of them even kneeling and making the Sign of the Cross.
Bishop Kieran Conry led the famous annual celebration of Corpus Christi in Arundel, West Sussex.
The Blessed Sacrament was escorted over a 93ft carpet of flowers by members of the Fitzalan Howard family and the Knights of Malta, St Gregory and the Holy Sepulchre in full regalia.
