YOURreaders will readily have corrected for themselves some typographical errors which crept into my Musings in Alsatia ("Last Link With Whitefriars," Dec. 31). It is perhaps worth pointing out that the word "primarily" is somehow missing from the se phra "that religious orders exist for the Church." Certainly they exist to serve the church — and the "world" no less — but in order that they may do this their special charisma must be safeguarded against hierarchical interference. Primarily, therefore. a religious order exists for the salvation of the souls of its members. The old Constitutions of all the ancient Orders make this clear. Some modern Congregations (16th century onwards) may perhaps express things differently. Finally, a word of congratulation on your moving so near to Carthusian Street, with its memories of Prior Houghton and his companions, and Sir Thomas More — and Colonel Newcome. In leaving Whitefriars Street f o r Charterhouse Street you would seem to have heard the invitation: "Friend, come up higher."
