DAILY MASS GUIDE SUN. JAN 9. THE HOLY FAMILY. gr.d.

Comm. of the Sunday within the Octave of the Epiphany. Creed. Preface of the Epiphany. (White) COLLECT of the Sunday: 'O Lord, we pray Thee. prosper the prayers of Thy suppliant people with Thy heavenly love, that they may not only see what ought to he done. but also he made strong to carry out what they shall have seen."
Most of these grave. sober Roman prayers were probably written when the Pelagian heresy taught (about 500 A.D.) that man could save himself by his own efforts without the help of supernatural Grace. The Collect assumes that
we pray. But for what ? Favours ? Yes—but the favour of seeing what we ought to do lot merels what we would like Lu get. and then, to be strengthened to carry it out in act.
is so sadly possible to see the right thing, and then to lack snergy to do it. Notice that we isk God to "follow up" our weakling prayers. We may hardly believe that God will answer us at all; we may even think we might not like it if He did.
But we are praying to a God oh "heavenly love." We are told to
make "acts of love": "0 my God, I love Thee • ," But we might well make acts of faith that God loves us. How hard, sometimes. to realise this! But, in His love, He will always give us more. and better, than we ask for or dream of.
