Missionaries fined in Nigeria

TWO Irish priests and a British and an American nun were each fined 40 Nigerian pounds (about £45) in Lagos last week. They paid the fines in court and were allowed to leave in the "personal custody" of Archbishop Aggey of Lagos, on condition he undertook to hand them over to the police at any time required.
The four, who pleaded guilty to entering the country illegally, were: Fr. Eamonn Madden, Kells, Co. Meath; Fr. Gerard Gogan, Drumcondra, Dublin; Sister Mary Quinn (British) and Sister Hortense Adams (American).
The necessary deportation papers were sent to the Commissioner for Internal Affairs for signature. A total of 61 priests and nuns have left Nigeria, following findings that they had entered the country illegally, since the end of the civil war, Bishop Whelan of Owerri, the former capital of Biafra, reported to Pope Paul last week on conditions there.
