By GERRY SHERRY " I am convinced that the success of the English Young Christian Workers is essential to the International Movement of the J.O.C., and It Is in England that I place all my hopes of the spread of the movement In all English-speaking countries"
Canon Joseph Cardijn, founder of the Y.C.W. said this to me when 1 saw him at the London Air Terminus, where he had stopped for a few hours on his way to Canada for the International Congress of the Y.C.W. at Montreal at the end of June.
AT U.N.E.S.C.O.
1 asked the Canon what type of representation the Y.C.W. was afforded in international affairs.
He replied, " We are represented as a World Youth Movement at U.N.O. and have accepted invitations to send observers to all the meetings. We also work with U.N.E.S.C.O. and many of our recommendations to them have been utilised. Of course, we have been represented at the International Labour Office for a long time and much good work has been achieved in this sphere."
MILITANT YOUTH He added," I feel the International Congress will be a most important event in the history of working class youth, because it symbolises the action of militant Catholic youth throughout the world.
"Our aim is the re-conquering for Christ of all working youth and therefore Catholic workers from all countries must participate."
He told me then that he would be touring America with Mr. Pat Keegan, the President of the English Y.C.W., who is also the International Secretary. He said also that the Pope had sent a letter to him about the International Congress. (Letter in French attached and can be quoted. Exclusive as yet to C.H.)
