Caution on Medjugorje

From the Bishop of Hexham and Newcastle REQUESTS by the Bishop of Mostar, Yugoslavia were published on May 5 in the Catholic Herald and they concerned Medjugorje where Our Lady is said to have appeared to six young people.
The bishop's statement requested that "nothing be written concerning these events in religious papers until a proper judgement has been passed, or in the case of something being written, that it be written critically and cautiously".
Another request was that "all parish personnel and witnesses in Medjugorje do not give out any statements for the press regarding the content of the apparitions." The Herald seems to have published such statements in the past two
weeks.
The bishop's commission "does not approve of priests and lay people organising pilgrimages to Medjugorje". People and Places June 22 publicises a Catholic tour company's coach tours to Medjugorje.
Whilst I am as anxious as anyone to see the growth of true devotion to Our Blessed Lady, and delighted to be powerfully and regularly reminded of the need for prayer and penance, I think we should take careful note of the local bishop's request.
Your readers who quote the similar history of Garabandal seem to have overlooked the official judgement of the Church that nothing supernatural occurred there.
