THE number of major seminarians in mission countries in the school year 1976-77 was 7,784, an increase of 217 over the previous year, it is reported by the Society of St Peter the Apostle, which financially supports seminarians and seminaries in mission countries.
It reported also that the number of major seminarians in mission countries had increased steadily for the last 12 years. The mission area with the greatest number of major and minor seminarians was Africa, with 3,970 major seminarians and 23,343 minor seminarians in 1977. Major seminarians are those in the last two years of college or the four years of post-college theology studies. Minor seminarians are those in high school or the first two years of college.
In 1975-76, the society reported, the number of ordinations to the priesthood was 548, an increase of 56 over the previous year. The number of new entries to the seminary for the 1976-77 school year was 2,125 — an increase of 122. In 1965, the figures for mission lands were 5,212 major seminarians, 415 ordinations, and 1,248 new entries to the seminary.
