DEAR CHILDREN, 1 expect most of you know that the relics of see
-Ls the Three Kings are preserved in Cologne Cathedral.
Perhaps that is why German Catholics have an
especial devotion to these Wise Men. I once lived -1for nearly three years in one of the oldest towns in
▪ Germany, and a saintly Bishop of that place (his sa name was John of Hildesheim) left us a legend of a' Gaspar, Melchior and Balthazar who, he said, all a came from different places and were told in different ▪ ways about the Star they were to look for and the
-5. Child they should adore. King Gaspar had a pet = ostrich, and on the night Jesus was born, it laid two • eggs and out of one came a lion and out of the other a a lamb; in Balthazar's garden a flower bloomed and a out of it flew a bird; and Melchior had a little son
• born that same night, and he told him about the ▪ Christ Child. Then these three Kings set out, and they met each other on the road to Bethlehem. So far as I know, Bishop John never told us how
▪ the Kings knew what these things meant., but I sup • pose he left us the story to teach us that quite unexpected things show us the way to Jesus if we just --e4stop and think about them for a bit.
Toy Tokens
▪ DID you get them right ? Robert got: LUDO, K: BOAT, and a STAMP ALBUM, while Rachel ere took home a PAINT BOX, DOLL'S HOUSE and E BOOK.
