Birmingham Youth Sunday:

LOSE
THE FAITH—AND CIVILISATION IS LOST —Archbishop Williams
From Our Own Correspondent • BIRMINGHAM.
" Tell the truth "; " Keep your promise," were the two slogans Archbishop Williams gave Catholic Youth massed on Sunday in Birmingham Cathedral for the Diocesan Youth Mov.ernent's inaugural High Mass.
Youth came from everywhere in their hun dreds, from the parish of the Sacred Heart, Coventry (five car-loads of them), and the. Y.C.W. mixed with Guides, Scouts, and with members of every service organisation in which youth has a part to play.
Archbishop Williams referred in his sermon to the coincidence that it should be on the feast of St. John Bosco that boys of 17 registered. Don Bosco's problem was the same in his day as ours to-day, namely, how to bring up youth to love and serve Our Lord.
Young England was' in danger, said the Archbishop. Christian civilisation was facing the sign-post at the cross-road. Was it to take the route leading to paganism or was there to be a return to the faith of its fathers?
" We believe that the only thing to save civilisation is a return to the Christian faith. If we once lose faith we shall lose civilisation," the Archbishop added. To win the war would mean nothing if the country lost its Christian soul. This Youth Movement supplied us with a golden opportunity. Let us, said His Grace, take full advantage of it and prepare ourselves to play a part in the war and fpr the nation.
RELIGION—YOUR JOB
" If there is a Catholic club in your parish, join it." said His Grace. " If you can't„ join one of the service organisations, such as the Cadets, A.T.C., or Scouts a, Guides. But these organisations will not look after your religion. That is your job. So find out first what time activities take place on Sunday, so that you can also go to Mass and Holy Cons. munion. Dov't join anything which dors not give facilities for the practice of your religion."
As a lesson from the past, the Archbishop referred to the life of St. Thomas More, who " had a wonderful worship for Holy Mass." He described himself as the King's good and loyal servant—but God's first. Dr. Williams concluded with a feeling tribute to our King. referring to his work for the people and his Christian example. " He is a fine example to us : he is a man who believes in God, and he loves his God, his country and his people. It was for us all to be loyal to him."
