Norman the confessor

TITEarticle of August 15 by Norman St. John-Stevas on what he considers to be the irrelevance of our priests in the present day left me wondering to what position in the Hierarchy he has' now been elevated; he not only professes to see "queues of men filing into the confessional," but also presumes to know what sins these people are going to confess.
He suggests that the priest's time is being wasted by what he describes as "overcrowding the confessional." Surely the priest sits in the confessional to dispense the mercy of Christ to those who are seeking it, the penitents in their turn going to confess what troubles their consciences and not to mention only what they think the confessor might prefer or want to hear.
If the confessor, exercising his God-given power in the Sacrament of Penance, were to give me the impression that his time was being wasted, or if I felt that my confession had to be tailor-made to suit the priest, then. my confidence in that priest and possibly in the Sacrament itself, would be in danger of being seriously undermined.
Among the titles suggested in the past for Mr. St. JohnStevas there have been "Bishop Norman" and even "Pope Norman." Perhaps we can now add that of "Norman the Confessor"!
