Teachers will study hunger problems

Catholic Herald Reporter -FIFTY teachers, representing some 30 Catholic schools throughout the country, will study various aspects of the Freedom from Hunger Campaign at a special conference in London next Sunday (14th).
The conference -in the Oratory Hall, Brompton Road— has been organised by the Sword of the Spirit movement as an aid to strengthening sixth-form groups which are at present studying world hunger problems, "The majority of teachers are so busy that they have few opportunities to get down to this study by themselves", a Sword of the Spirit Spokesman said. "This conference is their opening. Literature for use in their schools will be suggested and visual aids will be offered. Films related to the Freedom from Hunger campaign will be shown so as to give a thorough grounding in problems and projects in the underdeveloped countries."
Speakers at the conference will be Sir Herbert Broadley, UNICEF' representative for the United Kingdom. and Miss Mary Wilkie, who has been working in Bolivia on a mass literacy campaign sponsored by UNESCO.
On October 22 and 29, the Sword of the Spirit is holding meetings at 58 Sloane Street, London, to brief potential speakers on the Fredom from Hunger CAM. paign. Thirty people are expected for each session, and after briefing it is hoped that they will address members of their own society or organisation. and help the Sword of the Spirit to fulfill requests for speakers.
Miss Margaret Feeny, secretary of the Sword of the Spirit, addressed some 600 Catholics in Edinburgh at the weekend on the aims of the Freedom from Hunger Campaign.
MOTHER'S NEED IS DESPERATE
CATHOLIC HERALD readers have sent £492 to Douglas and Eliane Gibson in answer to the appeal launched in this paper a fortnight ago, to help the new centre for the socially inadequate and the young mother of 24, living in a foul room with six children and another on the way while her husband is in prison. Of this sum £412 is for the centre and .E80 for the mother.
There is. however, no concrete hope of accommodation for this Eliane Gibson appeals to CantoLic. Hettaen readers once more: "Can anyone offer two or three rooms ? I cannot even spend the £80 until they have somewhere decent to put new furniture and bedding".
All those trying to help this young woman agree that she is a good mother, fighting impossible circumstances. If rooms cannot be found, the family will have to be split up. If you can help to save them from this please write to Mrs. Eliane Gibson at 65 Eccleston Square, London S.W.1. Telephone : VICtoria 5362.
