Guild of Ransom record

Poor country parishes got more money than ever before from the Guild of Our Lady of Ransom last year, it was announced at the guild's annual meeting this week.
The grant of £18,150 was 17,000 up on last year's, and brought the grand total In the nine years under Mgr Anthony Stark's Mastership to exactly £134,000.
The guild also reported a slight increase in the number of new members; the amount of subscriptions paid has also continued to rise.
The guild sounded a note of "cautious optimism" about the future. If all went well, it should be able to increase its grants to the poor parishes again in 1978.
On Sunday the Guild held their traditional silent procession along the route from the Old Bailey, site of Newgate Prison, to Marble Arch, near where the Tyburn gallows stood. Hundreds of Catholics were executed there for their beliefs in the 16th and 17th century. The procession, the 67th without a break was led by Bishop Philip Harvey of North London.
Patrick O'Donovan was one of the walkers; for his account see Charterhouse this week.
