'NEWMAN MEETS IN CARDINAL'S CITY

Birmingham, the city with which the name of Cardinal Newman is so closely linked, was the Meeting place for this year's annual meeting of the Newman Association of Great Britain, on Saturday and Sunday last.
Mass for the Association was said at the Oratory by Fr. Geoffrey Walmsley, deputising for the chaplain to the Association.
The Oratory Newman relics were exhibited to members from London and elsewhere by Fr. Henry Tristram.
Mgr. Humphrey Bright, Auxiliary Bishop of Birmingham, at the annual dinner called upon the association to exercise its apostolate in the universities and other centres of advanced education.
Most impressive to London delegates was the Sunday visit to ()won College, the scene of Newman's greatest oratorical triumphs, and the institution whose buildings and history look back, not so much to Douai and St. Omer as to the C.atholicism of the last century, to Milner, Wiseman, Pugin. and Ullathorne.
Steady progress
The business meeting was held in private, but the Council was able to report a year of increased activity in most centres, and most noticeably in the Provinces where the adult education activities of the Association are making steady progress.
The Association has administered funds for educational work abroad, and particularly in Germany, and is now called upon to administer a fund donated from South Africa for the benefit of Catholic students' overseas travel.
Future plans are centred on the summer school to be held at Beaumont the Newman Association Summer School has won its place as one of the most successful Catholic gatherings in the country-and extension of work in Wales.
The new officers of the Association include President, Mr. Patrick Cussen, and Secretary, Dr. Anthony Wi II bourn.
