Vatican Paper Approves Cardinal Hinsley's Words
Approving reference to Cardinal Ilinsley's wish to "muzzle the Press" has appeared in the Osservatore Rarnano, Vatican semi-official newspaper, this week.
Cardinal Ilinsley, speaking at the annual general meeting of the Cat holie Truth Society (repotted last week), said he had wished " that we might muzzle the Press, dismantle the printing presses, close the cinemas —muzzle the world—and let the poor people go quietly about their daily business."
The " Osservatore" says that " every hour which passes proves how profoundly right this wish is, and how necessary it is to have it carried into practice."
"BURNING PAPER" " Press campaigns have aggravated the political tension," the Osservatore opines. " To-day it is the Press which creates public opinion."
The Vatican organ then compares the international Press to a paper .burning in close proximity to a powder magazine.
The function of newspapers, the Osservatore claims, is to " clarify " situations, and not to aggravate them.
Danzig Affects European Balance of Power
—OSSERVATORE ROMANO
Much comment has been aroused by an article in the semi-official Vatican newspaper, which points out that the Danzig dispute is not merely a question of Germans returning to the Reich, but that it affects the whole balance of power in Europe.
Giving the Polish point of view, the article emphasises that German control of the mouths of the Vistula would mean German hegemony in Europe.
