HAS THE PENDULUM begun to swing away from sexual licence? Was the free-fall of promiscuity and fashion for "alternative life-styles", accelerating over three decades, really a bungeejump which has reached the end of its elastic rope and is bouncing back? No trend lasts for ever, and history records the endless swings and movements of moral fashion (morality in the sexual field, that is, for laxity in other fields appears never to be condoned). The Victorians were (on the whole) stricter and more respectable than their Georgian parents, the flappers less so than their parents and their children. This paper
supports and celebrates signs that change is afoot. Rebellion and revolt always quicken the pulse, and indicate hope that things do not always have to be as they are. And things as they are fall far short of how our Maker intended them to be.
Last week we published a comment article by 18-year old Fiorella Sultana describing her rebellion against the sexual mores of her contemporaries. This week Joanna Bogle expands on the role of married partners in the domestic church. A piece is filed for next week on how motherhood should be cherished. Other items will follow as a Catholic Herald mini-series.
