Soviet Godless Paper Attacks Dr. Downey and Archbishop Amigo

(Front Our Russian Correspondent) The June 1 issue of Bezbozhnik, the organ of the Union of Militant Godless, again attacks the Church for allegedly supporting the "imperialist instigators of war " against the Soviet Union and Germany. First comes the Osservatore ROMan0 accused of being definitely pro-Ally and opposing a peaceful understanding between Germany and the U.S.S.R.
As a proof of this the Soviet paper adduces the undeniable fact that the
Catholic organ was against the " liberation " of Western Ukraine and White Russia and also the attack upon Finland.
The Vatican, Bezbozhnik says, acted discreetly at first veiling its policy by a pretence of neutrality, but the events in Finland forced the Catholic Church, as well as the United States, to throw down the mask and violently attack the Soviets.
When the Holy Father called the happenings in Poland and Finland " crimes calling to Heaven for vengeance," he revealed himself as " the spirit behind Anglo-French imperialism." His visit to the King of Italy is also interpreted as an attempt to unite Christian countries against the Nazi-Soviet entente.
BRITISH BISHOPS ATTACKED The leaders of the Church in England are subjected to an even stronger attack: " Downey, Archbishop of Liverpool, in one of the numerous pastorals issued by Anglican (sic) bishops, praises English imperialism, enumerating all the ideals for which England is alleged to light."
The Bishop of Southwark is also quoted by Bezbozhnik as having said that the attack upon Bolshevism is insufficiently strong and as advocating a new crusade for the preservation of Christian civilization against the disrupting forces of evil—this horrifies the Soviet organ.
GERMANS, TOO Representatives of the Anglican Church are let off much easier: "They share the views of their Catholic colleagues, but are compelled to act more cautiously, taking into consideration the feelings of their flocks, who obviously lack enthusiasm for the imperialist robber-war." Even German Catholics are said to be working for the ends of Anglo-French imperialism secretly in Germany, and openly in neutral countries.
The article is unsigned, but a note is added saying that a more complete text of it has been published by the Swedish paper Die Welt, probably Communist organ of Stockholm.
Because of the close relations between the Union of Militant Godless and the Kremlin the article is most significant.
