St. Mary's, Burnley, 100 Years Old This Week

The centenary of St. Mary's, Burnley, Lancs., was celebrated on Tuesday, when Mgr. William Asp.nall celebrated Solemn High Mass and Canon J. J. Ingram, the parish priest, preached.
St. Mary's, which is still structurally incomplete, was opened on August 2, 1849, by Bishop Brown, Vicar Apostolic of the Lancashire district (who later became the first Archbishop of Liverpool) three years after he had laid the foundation stone.
Built in imitation Gothic style, it was the intention to add a 180-foot spire to the tower of the church, but this has never been completed. The church was consecrated in 1929.
The centenary has been marked by a week of celebrations, in which the various societies of the parish have taken an active part. The festivities have included a centenary ball, a celebration tea and a parish field day with games and entertainments for the school children.
On Sunday ifext, August 7, Mgr. Masterson, Archbishop of Birmingham, will preach at a Solemn High Mass of Thanksgiving, at which the celebrant will be the parish priest, Canon J. I. Ingram.
